Preaching love thy competitor
Article Abstract:
Novell Inc pres Ray Noorda has helped the firm to change from an unsuccessful computer hardware company in 1983 into the major publisher of network software with earnings of $162.5 million in sales in 1991. Novell has accomplished this goal through a unique, cooperative approach it takes with companies that might otherwise be competitors. By working with other companies and sharing technology, not only does Novell's NetWare network operating system dominate 65 percent of the network market, other companies write software to work with NetWare instead of trying to oust Novell's position. An exception to this is Microsoft Corp., which is mounting an attack on Novell to unseat NetWare with its own Windows NT operating system. Novell's response is to continue to improve NetWare and to make sure that it works with Microsoft Windows. Microsoft will have a difficult time upsetting the cooperative infrastructure Novell has built with its resellers and technology sharers.

Article Abstract:
Jan Davidson started her educational software company, Davidson & Associates, by chance, yet it has grown to a $40 million concern. Davidson developed educational software for her tutoring business, which Apple marketed through its hobbyist producer catalogue. When the catalogue folded, Davidson decided to publish the software herself, and distribute it through Softsel. Educational software is suddenly big business, growing 47 percent in 1992, now that powerful microcomputers are affordable to home users. In addition, software is capable of supporting the multimedia applications that children enjoy. Davidson & Associates is one of the three largest educational software publishers; its Math Blaster program has sold over a million copies. Davidson is now steering the company toward curriculum software for schools, which is more difficult to sell, but potentially a huge market.
