Spreading the network
Article Abstract:
The next step in the use of computers in elementary and secondary schools will be away from individual microcomputers and toward local-area networks (LANs) and wide-area networks (WANs). Networks are used on both an educational and an administrative level. In one study, students in San Diego worked over a WAN with students in Alaska to create a newsletter and improved an average of two to three grade levels in language arts. In another study, students were found to benefit from writing to other students over a LAN rather than turning in papers to the teacher. Administrators and teachers use networking for tracking attendance, project coordination and voice mail. One school district superintendent believes he saves the cost of their voice mail package, CE Software Inc's Quickmail, every month because messages always get through. LANs also allow resource sharing of modems, printers and software.

Rooting out viruses
Article Abstract:
Computer viruses are often more annoying than destructive, but measures should nonetheless be implemented to protect computer software from unwanted intrusion. Software packages such as Norton Antivirus from Symantec Corp and Hyperaccess/5 from Hilgraeve Inc can provide a solid line of defense against computer viruses. Norton Antivirus operates by scanning a user's disk looking for sequences of characters unique to known viruses. Once a virus is located on a disk it is removed and the disk is immunized against further attacks by that same virus. Hyperaccess/5 is an excellent communications software package that also includes a feature for screening software that is downloaded over telephone lines. By using these or other security packages and by following safe computing practices users can be fairly safe from viruses.
