Precedent fails to embalm principle
Article Abstract:
Australian Prime Minister John Howard was able to cite legal precedent to resolve allegations of conflict of interest in public office. Politician Warren Entsch was cited for half ownership in a company that was awarded a defense department contract. Labor Party leader Kim Beazley referred to a precedent set by the High Court in 1975. Howard was able to find a precedent from 1974 to support his position.

His master's voice
Article Abstract:
Kim Beazley's attacks on the John Howard government's new policy for dealing with asylum-seekers in a push to win back Labor party's lost battlers are reported. It would be interesting to observe how far Beazley is prepared to go with some in the government wondering if he might be tempted to broaden the criticism of temporary training visas into more generalized opposition to immigration.
