Prison health care: Prison politics
Article Abstract:
The prison system in the U.S. does not get enough funds for health care despite their sincere pleas to the legislature, but it might be the high costs that drive the lawmakers to action on prison-related healthcare. Earlier, Congress had discussed, but not acted upon bipartisan legislative proposals to assist released prisoners with community re-entry to prevent recidivism, but with the Democratic takeover in 2007, the Congress might move the idea of treatment rather than long incarceration and to improve access to Medicaid for mentally ill detainees.

Prison health care: Population health
Article Abstract:
Statistics show that in 2005 around 23 percent of state prisoners and 30 percent of jail inmates reported symptoms of major depression, while another significant number had symptoms of psychotic disorders. Providing health care in correctional institutions is difficult as the funding is low, and prison bureaucracies focus primarily on providing security and punishment, besides, the high proportion of racial minorities increasing the rate of chronic diseases, add burden to correctional health care.
