Prison health care: Prisoners and research
Article Abstract:
An expert panel at the Institute of Medicine recommended changes to 30-year old federal guidelines on research involving prisoners in 2006. The new rules stipulate that risks and benefits of each proposed study must be weighed just as they are when the subjects are non-prisoners, but the panel has not named the research priorities related to criminal justice to improve prisoner' health, decrease recidivism, and find ways to keep the mentally ill, substance abusers, and sex offenders out of prison.
