Kim Beazley's prime ministerial approval rating in Newspoll hit an all-time low of 18 percent, and having lost two previous elections, he is in his seventh year as leader. There is no sign of an imminent Labor leadership change though there are many competitors, however, Beazley's supporters and critics alike would much prefer to see the leader at least competitive, and the Australian Labor Party's (ALP) senior leaders have said that Beazley has three months to prove himself.

The rift between Gough Whitlam and Laurie Brereton, which could have resulted in the split of the Labor Party, was prevented probably due the efforts of Mark Latham and his victory in the caucus ballot for the Labor leadership. The members of the Labor Party are burying the past indifferences for an optimistic future.
