Quebec store chain to buy Ontario rival

Canadian convenience store chain Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc announced that it will acquire Silcorp Ltd for $220-million in cash and stock, equivalent to $23 per share. Couche-tard chmn and pres Alain Bouchard said they were merging to ensure their survival in a market that is being dominated by the big grocery chains. After the merger was announced, Silcorp's shares increased by $2 while Couche-tard shares fell by $1.50.
