The Global Equity Market, which is a 10-nation global alliance, will create an international trading exchange. The GEM, which includes the Toronto Stock Exchange along with stock exchanges from Japan, Brazil, France, the Netherlands, Belgium and other countries, will allow 24-hour trading in about 1,000 stocks.

Dan Sullivan, chairman of the Toronto Stock Exchange, claims that an agreement signed between the Nasdaq stock market and the government of Quebec is politically motiviated, and were the Toronto Stock Exchange to enter into such a deal, it would be purely for business.
