RCMP knew of ATB woes 16 months before public
Article Abstract:
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has been asked by Alberta's Justice Dept to conduct a criminal investigation into Alberta Treasury Branches (ATB) in 1998. The Justice Dept requested the probe after they uncovered evidence that required a criminal investigation. In Aug 1998, Alberta Treasury Stockwell admitted that ATB lent money to the West Edmonto Mall after four years of refusal to admit that it was involved in refinancing the mall. ATB filed a C$450-million suit against the mall, alleging the former ATB head Elmer Leahy accepted brides from the mall owners.
