RIVALS IN DEBATE TAKE AIM AT DEAN
Article Abstract:
Seven of the nine Democratic presidential candidates met in Iowa for a final debate before the state's Jan. 19 caucuses. Wesley Clark and Al Sharpton had decided not to participate or campaign in the state. Although Sen. Joseph Lieberman will not be part of the Jan. 19 process, he wanted to engage in the debate and focus on Howard Dean's refusal to release some of his gubernatorial records and papers. International trade was a key component in the discussions because of the Democratic Party's opposition to free trade agreements that hurt Americans' economic interests. Sen. John Kerry also emphasized Dean's reluctance to condemn Osama bin Laden until a trial took place.
