Depression is Australia's most debilitating and expensive illness, costing the community in excess of $3 billion a year in direct and indirect costs. Prozac, and many other anti-depressant drugs that followed it are called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and they work by preventing the brain from reabsorbing serotonin, a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in the regulation of mood and a few other things like body temperature.
