The Australian Republican movement will not be effective until it appeals to the middle class as much as it appeals to the wealthy class. Party members believe wealthy spokesman Malcolm Turnbull may not be the best representative for their party, and that local representatives should become more prominent in the party movement. A fundraising party at the home of a wealthy Republican supporter provides empirical proof for this position.

The Australian Republic Movement (ARM) took another look at Malcolm Turnbull during the 1998 Constitutional Convention and decided they would not let him dominate the movement. Turnbull denies he is trying to dominate and reminds his critics that he received the highest vote in the country as head of the New South Wales ARM ticket and is held in high esteem regarding his views on constitutional issues.
