Ringing up a sale
Article Abstract:
In a carefully orchestrated move John Howard announced plans Mar 1998 to sell the remaining two-thirds of communications giant Telstra for $40 billion. The decision highlights Howard's intent to make Australia the greatest share-owning democracy in the world and tackle government debt. Labor has opposed the sale, but the government's rebuttal is that Labor initiated privatization with the sale of Qantas and the Commonwealth Bank.

Article Abstract:
Polls in Australia suggest that the future of the Coalition government rests in the hands of voters in NSW and Victoria. Labor in these states has failed to convince voters and may pick up at best two seats in NSW. The Coalition is performing well in Victoria and may retain all its seats but one or two. Nonetheless, the electorate is set to give the balance of power to minor parties.
