The 2001 tour of Australia by the British and Irish Lions rugby team is leading up to the first of three tests in Gabba, Brisbane, but the international match could descend into a riot. At the game between the Lions and New South Wales at the end of June, a violent confrontation resulted in numerous players being sent off, and management fear further violence.

In October 2001 Australian rugby player John Eales will retire from sport and take up the position of executive trainee with Bankers Trust, at a fee appropriate to his success in the rugby world. Relevant points include the conflict with Rupert Murdoch's News Limited Super League challenge to the NRL's supremacy that helped bring about the current demise of rugby in Australia.
