TV ads return to lament plight of uninsured
Article Abstract:
The Health Insurance Association of America has launched a $1 million television advertising campaign resurrecting the Harry and Louise characters that helped defeat President Clinton's health reform plan. The new campaign sends out the message that the trade association is concerned about the plight of 44 million uninsured Americans. This seems ironic as the previous Harry and Louise campaign shot down the Clinton plan to guarantee health care for all.

25% of Latinos lack health insurance
Article Abstract:
Hispanics account for almost 12% of the US population, but represent a quarter of the nation's uninsured, according to a report by the American College of Physicians/American Society of Internal Medicine. The report says this puts the ethnic group at greater risk of suffering from a host of dangerous illnesses such as high blood pressure, cancer and untreated diabetes. The report warns that the problem will become more acute as Latinos continue to grow at a faster rate than the entire population.

Rules force health insurers to make quicker decisions
Article Abstract:
The health insurance industry will be mandated to cut the time required for an answer on coverage from 90 days or more to as few as 15 days. The US Dept of Labor has enacted rules aimed at providing some of the more modest protections of the proposed patients' bill of rights. The rules will cover around 130 million Americans who get health insurance through private employers. The rules also require insurers to decide within 30 days whether to pay for treatmetns that patients receive without prior approval.
