Political observers see Prime Minister John Howard's political decisions being increasingly aimed at engaging the opposition leader John Latham in a one-on-one combat on issues of national interest but the opposition leader is not biting the bait. John Latham's measured responses to all the prime minister's moves is a welcome change compared to the previous labor leaders but the competitive battle between the two leaders promises to do good for the nation.

However, after a decade, its compaction time as a series of paternalistic and protectionist decisions indicate a slide in its economic professionalism on account of poor decisions relating to AWB, Telstra and Qantas, which have tarnished his economic record.
