Seagram faces fight for PolyGram

Seagram Co. Ltd. of Montreal, Canada, is facing serious competition with two US companies, Thomas H. Lee Co. and Forstmann Little & Co., to acquire PolyGram NV of the Netherlands, the biggest music firm in the world. PolyGram is anticipated to fetch no less than $10 billion. Thomas H. Lee and Forstmann Little have joined forces and showed their interest to PolyGram and its parent firm Royal Philips Electronics NV, which holds 75% of PolyGram. Seagram and Royal Philips were reported to be negotiating about probable sale of PolyGram, but both companies declined to confirm the report.

Imax to take 15-per-cent stake in mainframe entertainment

Imax Corp of Mississauga, Ontario, will acquire 15% of the equity and senior convertible debt in computer animation commpany Mainframe Entertainment Inc of Vancouver, British Columbia, for C$16 million. Imax will eventually own a 24% stake in Mainframe if its converts the five-year senior debentures into common stock. As part of the deal, the companies will co-finance and co-produce 3D animation films for the Imax formats and other markets.

Thomson may be eyeing rival

Toronto, Ont.-based Thomson Corp. is considering an acquisition of rival Amsterdam, Netherlands-based Wolters Kluwer NV. Thomson, which is selling most of its newspaper holdings, is about twice as large as Wolters Kluwer in terms of annual sales.
