Serving no chip before its time
Article Abstract:
Intel Corp announces that it will need a few extra months to develop its new P5 microprocessor. The company's shares dropped $1.25 per share to $55.25 after the announcement. Intel has released very few details about the chip and will not let photographers take pictures of the product. The P5 has more than 3 million transistors, which is three times as many as found on the 80486 microprocessor. The official name of the P5 has not yet been decided. Intel and several industry analysts agree that the delay will not hurt sales. The P5 is expected to have a large impact on the computer industry and will probably be a major element in microcomputers in the near future. Intel also believes that the delay allows the company to sell more of its older products before those product seem obsolete.

LSI Logic expects $100 million loss
Article Abstract:
LSI Logic Corp is taking a restructuring charge of up to $110 million and plans to reduce its work force by 450 employees. The semiconductor company blames low sales in Japan and in the military and aerospace markets for the financial crisis. The company is actively seeking new partners for its manufacturing and design operations. LSI's problems are partially the result of financial uncertainty at DEC, one of LSI's largest customers. The restructuring involves cost cutting, work force reductions and should save LSI about $10 million in expenses each quarter. LSI reported a profit of $804,000 on sales of $172.4 million in the 3rd qtr 1991. The company lost $5.9 million on sales of $151.8 million in the 2nd qtr 1992.
