Shedding the past: Moslem republics challenge Communist rule

Opposition movements in Tadzhikistan and other parts of Soviet Central Asia are threatening the Communist Party's monopoly of power. These republics, whose populations are largely Muslim, are beset with economic problems that help to fuel the pro-democracy, pro-Islam movement.
