The regional department store has disappeared, and other than a protest by Chicagoans about renaming the Marshall Field's flagship store, consumers don't seem to care. Federated Department Stores, which already owns Macy's and Bloomingdale's, has acquired May, owner of Hecht's, Filene's, Robinson-May, Famous-Barr, Foley's, Meier & Frank, Marshall Field's, Strawbridge's, Kaufmann's and Lord & Taylor.
