Angering Settlers, Sharon Says Most May Have to Leave Gaza
Article Abstract:
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has announced that he will pursue a plan to remove Jewish settlements from the Gaza Strip. It is a proposal that has made settlers very bitter toward Sharon. The prime minister is working on disengaging Israeli troops from the occupied Palestinian section as part of his cooperation with the Bush administration peace plan. There is also general concern among various Israeli officials and political leaders that Israel has to make adjustments in its security policies to insure that Arabs do not outnumber Jews and pose a threat to the country's Jewish identity and democratic systems.

Overnight, a Towering Divide Rises in Jerusalem
Article Abstract:
Israel has begun construction of a concrete wall around the outskirts of eastern Jerusalem as part of its overall plan to build a security fortress that would make it difficult for suicide bombers to enter from the West Bank. The greatest impact is on the Palestinian town of Abu Dis that depends upon Jerusalem for work, services and family interaction. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon reminds critics that the wall would not be required if only Palestinians had ceased terrorist attacks against Israelis. Palestine National Authority Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei is a resident of Abu Dis.
