Many leading indicators suggest that Canada's economy is improving. Interest rates are low, inflation is under control and housing starts are up. Yet, many Canadians are worried about job instability and fewer social services. Disposable income has fallen and the gap between rich and poor has risen.

Canada's 17% jobless rate in youth ages 15-24 has prompted dire predictions of a generation of lost productivity. However, three of the four unemployed youths profiled in the 1984 story, when the jobless rate was higher, are now prosperous, and the fourth, a teacher, has opted for part-time work.
