Sowing seeds of bittnersness
Article Abstract:
The Clinton Administration is seeking the support of other countries in its attack against the European Union's Common Agricultural Policy. The US has been demanding Europe to adopt more market-oriented farm policies instead of resorting to tariffs and subsidies to protect the farming industry. Europe's system of quotas, price guarantees, production subsidies, land set-aside allotments and other payments account for more than half of farm income. The system promotes overproduction, with the surpluses sopped up with $5 billion to $10 billion in annual subsidies for exporters.

AFL-CIO flexes muscle against China IPO
Article Abstract:
PetroChina's $5 billion initial public offering is being blocked by the AFL-CIO. The stock offering would give investors 15% ownership in PetroChina and list shares on the New York Stock Exchange, while its parent company, China National Petroleum (CNP), would own 85%. The AFL-CIO claims that the set up would be unfavorable for minority investors. The union is also concerned about alleged environmental abuses in Tibet by CNP and its plans to layoff thousands of workers.

Holiday cashmere not in danger from duties
Article Abstract:
Scottish and Italian makers will not be greatly hurt by the possible US trade sanctions against European cashmere because the implementation of the sanctions has been delayed too long to affect the 2000 holiday shopping season. The sanctions, which also include mineral warer and handbags, are due to ongoing disputes about about bananas and beef between the US and the European Union. The sanctions have been under consideration since May 2000.
