American plans more legroom in coach
Article Abstract:
American Airlines Inc has announced its plan to increase its economy-class legroom by as much as 5 inches. The airlines said it is planning to knock two rows of seats out of each of its 700 jets, to give it 7,200 fewer seats a day or an additional 6.4% space. American will spend $70 million for the program, and expects to have its domestic fleet done by Nov 2000 and its international fleet by 2000.

St. Louis gives American-TWA deal big thumbs up

Residents of St Louis, MO, are relieved after American Airlines gave assurances that the city would still be a major hub for the airline after its acquisition of Trans World Airlines pushes through. St Louis has the largest concentration of Fortune 500 companies in the US and it is a source of local pride to be able to fly people whereever they want to go. It is the gateway to 91 cities around the world, including London and Paris.

Is American-United rivalry too friendly?

United Air Lines Inc. plans to acquire US Airways Inc. and sell some assets to American Airlines Inc. If the Dept of Justice approves the transaction, United and American would be at least bigger than No. 3 Delta Air Lines, and both would control 50% of the US air transportation market.
