Starbucks coffee headed for store shelves

Starbucks, a retailer of specialty coffee, is teaming up with Phillip Morris's Kraft Foods division to market the Starbucks super-premium brand by 1999. However, terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The deal, which calls for Kraft to distribute Starbucks coffees to over 30,000 supermarkets nationwide, is expected to increase Starbucks' 1999 revenue to $1.8 billion, according to Starbucks chief Howard Schultz. Kraft, the No. 2 packaged foods distributor worldwide, also markets the Maxwell House and General Foods brands.

E-retailers sign on to promotional frenzy

More e-commerce businesses are adopting the promotional strategies of conventional stores as they offer discounts, giveaways, coupons and contests to online shoppers. This comes as the online retail industry becomes more competitive, with around 700,000 players vying to capture a healthy share of the projected $15 billion that online shoppers could spend. Online shoppers are also becoming more demanding and more particular about the retailer they deal with.
