Start-ups use strategy to attract business travelers; Midway: early boost helps growth at Raleigh/Durham

Midway Airlines Inc is adhering to its original strategy of building Raleigh/Durham Airport (RDU) as a hub for business travelers. According to Midway CEO Robert Ferguson, the airline, which started with 42 flights per day at RDU, expects to have 332 daily flights to and from the airport by early 2002, from its present 246. Ferguson said it plans to compete with Southwest Airlines Inc on service instead of fares. On Nov 7, 2000, Midway will start its first transcontinental service aimed at high-tech businesses in the Raleigh area.

United Airlines target the tardy

United Airlines will implement a new policy that will encourage its passengers to be on time during their departure schedules. Likewise, the company's new policy is a strategy to make its planes depart as scheduled. In April and May 1999, United will make its policy known to passengers through newsletters, audio reminders, in-flight videos and signs. The reminders instruct passengers to be in their seats 10 minutes prior to their respective flight schedules.

Continental chief wants to ban air ragers

Continental Airlines Inc CEO Gordon Bethune is requesting Congress to pass a bill that would prohibit violent passengers to board all carriers in the US. The move was a reaction to an accident that endangered the life of a Continental employee during a scuffle with a persistent passenger. Although passenger misconduct could result in prosecution and fines, Bethune would want to see a total ban of abusive passengers.
