Steel maker forged fate with union deals

The Canadian steel company Stelco's decision to seek protection from its creditors under the Companies' Creditor Arrangement Act (CCAA) is discussed. Apart from cheap still imports, expensive Canadian dollar, the main reason for the company's restructuring is the previous chief executive officer, Jim Alfano's decision in August 2000 to pay employees at the company's Lake Erie plant a 3.3percent raise.
