'Super chip' ready for test
Article Abstract:
Transmeta, a Silicon Valley, CA, startup, is ready to begin testing its so-called 'smart' computer chip. The chip, named the Crusoe, is an inexpensive chip that is designed to power computers that will weigh under 2 pounds as well as small wireless computing devices for video and DVD movies. Transmeta's Crusoe chip, which will operate on the Linux operating system, is expected to force Intel to reduce its prices and develop a competing chip design.

Stone Age ways threaten to rock chipmaking industry
Article Abstract:
A growing number of semiconductor equipment industry observers are criticizing chip manufacturing equipment producers for their slowness in embracing state-of-the-art information technology. As result, say these observers, much of the industry trails other sectors and even smokestack industries by 10-20 years. It is predicted that many in the business will ultimately be forced out of the market if they do not evolve quickly into the online, electronic commerce age.
