Stormy times ahead for the markets

The Australian monetary exchange rate may be in a vulnerable position depending on how the US manages its stock market in the second half of 1999. The US economy has prospered dramatically for seven years and the stock market has surged into a bubble analysts fear may burst. The US Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan will most likely raise interest rates at the end of June 1999, to control growth. There will be global collateral damage should the US bubble burst.

The heads of the Reserve Bank and the federal Treasury of Australia are worried as the traditionally close link between the performances of the Australian economy and U.S. economy has gone down. According to The Australian Financial Review report, if the U.S. budget is going to remain in deficit for some time and its current account is not funded, then economic adjustment of major proportions will take place.
