Strike forces Falconbridge to shut mines
Article Abstract:
Falconbridge Ltd. shut down most of its Sudbury nickel operations on February 1, 2004 after workers walked off the job, curtailing production as demand for the metal increased and supply became tight. The company and the union representing about 1,050 production and maintenance workers were negotiating for many months, but failed to reach a new collective agreement before the employees' contract expired at midnight of January 31, 2004.
