A third wave of petroleum price increases would break open fault-lines in the American economy that would reverberate through global financial markets with adverse implications for global economic growth. Australian Treasurer Peter Costello indicated that the task ahead in relation to the economic policy would also be to manage current global imbalances, particularly those between savings and investment between China and the US.
