Taking a hands-on approach at Aldus
Article Abstract:
Aldus Corp Pres and founder Paul S. Brainerd has been called the father of desktop publishing. The company was founded in 1984 and launched its first product, PageMaker, on the fledgling Apple Macintosh platform the same year. When PageMaker first entered the market, laser printing technology could not produce high-quality documents and the Apple Macintosh did not offer a hard disk drive. Creative users pushed the edges of technology and caused PageMaker to evolve. While the use of microcomputers has revolutionized how people conceive of and store information, the goal of the paperless office has yet to be achieved; people have strong cultural ties to paper. While Aldus recently endured four poor quarters and was forced to lay off employees the company has restructured itself and is in a growth mode again. Brainerd is concentrating on professional graphics, consumer products and providing good service and support.

As simple as drag, drop and draw
Article Abstract:
Shapeware Corp's $299 Visio software product is evaluated. Visio, a Microsoft Windows-based drawing program, simplifies the drawing process so that people who are relatively unskilled in graphics arts can create attractive diagrams, charts or space plans. Visio exploits the idea that drawings are made up of standard shapes, such as rectangles, circles or arrows. Visio has 15 stencils that comprise hundreds of 'smart' shapes, and the program's shapes can be modified or connected together, so that the program functions like an Erector set for drawings. Users can create their own customized shapes and stencils. Visio requires at least an 80386SX-based microcomputer, 4Mbytes of system memory, Windows 3.1 and a VGA-or-better monitor.
