Tax debate no match for fiscal rectitude

The Australian economy is seen in other countries as a miracle, but if the 2000 budget shows signs of high spending, the market will react with higher interest rates and increased unemployment. Treasurer Peter Costello says the government will not sacrifice its surplus, and the budget he will deliver in 1999 will send a message that Australia plans to maintain a strong fiscal policy.
