The 1998 Australian men's tennis team lost to Zimbabwe in the Davis Cup due to illness and fighting between team member Mark Philippoussis and captain John Newcombe. The quarrel has been resolved and the 1999 team is expected to beat the Zimbabwean team in the first round of the 1999 Davis cup in Harare.

The Australian tennis team has an evens chance of winning the Davis Cup in Barcelona, Spain, in December 2000. If they do succeed it will be as much due to medical science as talent and spirit as most of the team are injured.
