Telecom firms hook $4B deal

Alcatel Alsthom's decision to purchase DSC Communications in a stock deal worth $4.4 billion further accelerates the consolidation trend in the telecommunications equipment industry. Alcatel, the world's largest telecom firm with base in France, will benefit from DSC's technology for routing data through large networks. The merger, that saw Alcatel investing in the construction of the pipes of the network complementary of DSC's routing software, is also set to improve Alcatel's presence in the US market.

Lucent, Alcatel agree to merger talks

Lucent Technologies Inc's board on May 22, 2001 approved merger discussions with France-based Alcatel NV, according to sources close to the decision. The company's board agreed to pursue an agreement intended as a merger of equals with little or no premium on Lucent's share price. Earlier, Alcatel's board also agreed to pursue talks, which stems from the company's bid for Lucent's fiber-optic cable division. The agreement could draw a competing offer from a third party including Cisco Systems Inc.

Lucent Technologies Inc and French telecommunications equipment rival Alcatel NV broke off merger talks on May 29, 2001, in an embarrasing 11th- hour about-face that leaves Lucent's future ind oubt. negotiations collapsed after Lucent's board met and rejected the terms of $22 billion deal. Lucent CEO Henry Schact said that the the company was forced toback out because the deal was looking more like a takeover than a merger of equals.
