The Tories polled poorly in all six Apr 1, 1996, parliamentary by-elections in Canada, which prompted Reform Party leaders to claim that their party is now Canada's leading right-wing party. However, polls show that Tory leader Jean Charest is more popular than Reform leader Preston Manning.
