Pres Clinton's early 1995 summit meeting in Canada with Prime Minister Jean Chretien may not have been a history-making event, but it did allow the two leaders to cultivate their close personal ties. Both men enjoyed each other's company, and each man's wife also seemed taken with her counterpart.

Canadian firms have more than $5 billion invested in Chile, primarily in the mining industry. Cominco Ltd and Teck Corp are developing a large copper deposit in the altiplano region of Chile. Prime Minister Jean Chretien will travel to Chile in Feb 1995, to help negotiate more trade contracts.

Chilean leaders are engaged in serious negotiations to join the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and Canadian International Trade Minister Roy MacLaren is a strong advocate of the Chilean position. Canada hopes to limit the trading power of the US by allowing Chile to join NAFTA.
