Article Abstract:
Budget cuts due to the economic recession have severely affected state library agencies in the entire US. An affluent suburb such as Fairfax County, VA, could see 15 of its 22 public libraries closing down because of a $200 million revenue shortfall. A survey by the American Library Assn revealed that 40% of responding libraries had had to postpone hiring or retrench, furlough or reduce the working hours of employees. No one doubts the importance of libraries, but they are usually prioritized lower than the more immediate public services and other social programs.

Even Big Bird has his critics
Article Abstract:
Public broadcasting is under attack from some sectors of society. Even 'Sesame Street,' a long-running educational television series aimed at preschool children, has not been spared. Critics believe that the television series deludes children into believing that school is nothing but play. Others deplorethe aggressiveness of its characters albeit in a subtle way. Still others lament the show's effect on the intellectual development of children.
