Dole won a series of primary victories in Mar 1996, and he will probably earn enough delegates by Apr 1996, to lockup the Republican presidential nomination. He is now mulling over various vice presidential candidates. Dole's first choice, Colin Powell, says he will not accept the position.

Article Abstract:
Dole announced on May 15, 1996, that he is quitting the Senate and his leadership position to devote himself full-time to the presidential campaign. This move seemed to reinvigorate his campaign, and may keep him out of anticipated political battles in Congress.

Alexander won 18% of the vote in the Republican Iowa caucuses, finishing third behind Bob Dole and Pat Buchanan. Alexander, a moderate, says he is the logical choice for the nomination if Bob Dole does poorly in New Hampshire and other upcoming primaries.
