Turning the corner; cautiously, Alberta starts to increase spending

Alberta's financial statements for the 1995-96 FY reveal a $1.1 billion surplus. Although the surplus will be applied to the provincial debt, $375 million saved from reduced interest payments and administrative costs will be spent on services such as health care, seniors' benefits and education.

King of Alberta: Premier Ralph Klein's Tories are riding high
Article Abstract:
Klein implemented a 20% spending cut after he was elected premier of Alberta in 1993. His fiscal policies have generally been popular with the voters and have inspired budget cuts in other provinces. He currently has a 70% approval rating and is likely to call an election in spring 1997.

Klein is touring the province reporting to voters that his government has cut spending by $2.3 billion. He wants to know how they would like the money reinvested. Although the budget cutting plan runs through 1997, the goal of $2.6 billion in spending cuts has almost been reached.
