Thomson's B.C. paper sale raises ire of media rivals
Article Abstract:
Thomson Corp.'s sale of its Vancouver Island, British Columbia, papers labeled the Times Colonist, the Nanaimo Daily News and others to Southam Inc. is being questioned by its competitors. Southam, a media firm controlled by Conrad Black, was able to acquire the Times Colonist, the Nanaimo Daily News and four other community papers for an undisclosed amount, giving the firm the ownership of 14 of the 16 newspapers circulating in the province. Thomson's competitors, Torstar Corp. and Sun Media Corp., who each submitted their own bids for the papers, criticized the bidding process as unfair.
