Torstar win would create Internet giant

Sun Media Corp.'s proposed acquisition by Torstar Corp., a rival newspaper publishing company headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, for C$748 million is expected to create a new entity that will have significant presence in Internet-advertising. The purchase deal, if consummated, will allow Torstar to gain control of Sun Media Corp.'s highly-popular www.canoe.com site in the Internet. The Web site, complementing Torstar's very own www.thestar.com and www.toronto.com, will enable Torstar to generate substantial revenues from advertisers.

Atlantis to buy 10% stake in Digital Renaissance

Atlantis Communications Inc., a Toronto, Ontario-based film and television producer, is acquiring a 10% stake in Digital Renaissance Inc. of Toronto for an undisclosed amount. The deal will boost Atlantis' ownership in Digital Renaissance to 20% within 1999 and help Atlantic leverage its stable of television shows and movies with Digital Renaissance's ability to create multimedia and interactive content on the Internet. The deal calls for Atlantis to provide Digital Renaissance a way to reach potential clients in different markets.
