Toys R Us to fight order to end supply deals
Article Abstract:
Toys R Us will challenge directives from federal antitrust regulators, to discontinue policies that prevent discount warehouse clubs from getting the same toys sold by other retailers. The FTC claims that Toys R US convinced major toy manufacturers to stop selling any toy products to warehouse clubs, aside from distinct toy lines, when the company was encountering intensified competition from the discount retailers. FTC antitrust chief William Baer notes that retailers can not enter into deals that limit or eliminate the supply of products to other retailers. However, Toys R Us reports that it does not plan to alter its practices, and will take the case to the US Court of Appeals.

FTC wants diet claims spelled out

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has ordered diet supplement providers to clarify their advertising claims for their products, to allow consumers get accurate and complete information about diet supplements. The FTC is concerned that claims such as 'scientists now agree' and disclaimer 'results may vary' for products including vitamins, minerals, herbal products, amino acids and hormones could be misleading. However, Council for Responsible Nutrition CEO John Cordaro said that the FTC failed to address other issues, such as the outside experts it relies on for reviewing advertising claims.
