Trying early-bird tax programs
Article Abstract:
Several 'early bird' tax preparation programs have already appeared. These programs allow a user to begin tax preparations even though Congress will not finalize the tax laws until Jan or Feb 1992. Users of early-bird programs will receive free final and fileable versions of their programs when Congress is done. Six early-bird programs are mentioned: Andrew Tobias's Taxcut 1040, $89.95, from MECA Software Inc; Taxcut EZ/A, $29.95, also from MECA; Turbotax for DOS, $79.95, from Chipsoft Inc; JK Lasser's Your Income Tax, $74.95, from Simon & Schuster Software; EasyTax, $79.95, from Timeworks Inc; and Personal Tax Edge, $49, from Parsons Technology Inc. Taxcut and Turbotax are especially recommended. Macintax, the most popular tax preparer for the Mac, is acquired by Chipsoft, which says the program will remain the same except that help and advice systems will be added to it.

Managing your money
Article Abstract:
Version 7.0 of Andrew Tobias' Managing Your Money provides users with an easy-to-use, powerful management system for tracking personal finances. Current users of Managing Your Money can upgrade to version 7.0 for $49.95, while first time users will face a retail price of $219.95. The price is higher than some other financial management programs, but Managing Your Money has many powerful features. The new version includes improved pull-down help screens, VGA-compatible graphics and an interface reminiscent of Windows 3.0. Managing Your Money is a modular program with sections covering budgeting, banking, bill paying, tax planning, insurance planning and portfolio management. The program also includes a word processor, an appointment scheduler, a card file for addresses and an electronic bill-paying link.
