U.S. Steps Up Effort Against Drug Imports
Article Abstract:
The FDA, in coordination with the US Customs Bureau, is investigating drugs that are coming from Canada at substantially cheaper prices than those of US products. The agencies maintain that the pharmaceuticals are defective because they are produced in other countries and are counterfeit copies of US drugs. States and cities that support the imports maintain that the FDA has not shown that anyone has been harmed by the imports. They believe that the Canadian drugs help save money for public employees. The pharmaceutical industry depends on much of its profit from US sales of drugs at higher prices and wants the FDA to uphold legislation that prevents imports unless they are safe.

Drug Makers' New Intensity In Defense of U.S. Borders
Article Abstract:
Pharmaceutical manufacturers are campaigning hard against any congressional legislation that would allow both wholesale and Internet imports of their drugs that are priced more cheaply overseas and in Canada. American consumers are able to reduce their prescription costs by purchasing their medications outside of the US. Drug companies are concerned about the threat to profits which in turn could hurt research and development for new drugs. They also fear safety factors that may be diminished if any business entity can ship drugs to the US.

Pfizer Moves to Stem Canadian Drug Imports
Article Abstract:
Pfizer Inc. has joined other US pharmaceutical companies, such as GlaxoSmithKline, Wyeth and AstraZeneca, in tracking orders from Canadian pharmacies to see that they do not exceed prescriptions from Canadian doctors. Despite House passage of a bill allowing drug imports into the US from Canadian pharmacies, manufacturers are threatening to withhold shipments to them to prevent drugstore exports to US customers who have to pay 67% more for drugs.
