U.S. air bag test plan includes kids
Article Abstract:
Federal regulators will recommend that a crash dummy the size of a 6-year-old child be certified for use in crash tests of air bags and safety belts. The proposal marks the first time in 26 years that a dummy other than that of an average-size male would be used in federal auto crash test. The child-sized dummies would be used in government tests beginning in 2002 when air bags would be required to be safe for children and women. Automakers plan to install air bags that are capable of detecting the size and position of the passenger in front of the bag. This would enable the air bag to be deployed only with a measured force.
