US carmakers look to Asia
Article Abstract:
US automakers are renewing efforts to secure a foothold in Asia, which is projected to be the fastest-rising global marketplace in the next five years. General Motors made a move to purchase a 20% interest in Fuji Heavy Industries of Japan, manufacturer of Subaru vehicles. Alliances similar to that of General Motors and Fuji offer mutual advantages as US automakers gain access to needed technology or to desired Asian-Pacific markets. Meanwhile, Asian automakers secure deals that reduce the costs of research and development.
