U.S. chip makers stem the tide in trade battles with Japanese
Article Abstract:
American semiconductor manufacturers are expected to make a comeback despite a steady loss of market share to Japanese competition since 1982. US manufacturers claim slightly under 40 percent of the world semiconductor market; while this figure was 70 percent in the 1970s, it has risen over the last few years, particularly during 1990. The Japanese claimed 51 percent of the market in 1988, but that figure is in decline. The Sematech semiconductor industry consortium and VLSI Research Inc have announced that American semiconductor equipment suppliers have increased their market share from 38 percent in 1990 to 41 percent in 1991. Analysts attribute government programs and American chip quality as factors encouraging a strong American market presence. The American semiconductor industry will succeed primarily because it has continued to provide innovative chip designs for computing, displaying graphics and transmitting data.

Japan blames U.S. makers in chip feud
Article Abstract:
A survey of Japanese computer chip users implemented by Japan's Electronic Industries Association contends that US semiconductor suppliers have not attained a 20 percent share of Japan's market because they have cancelled deliveries of computer chips worth tens of millions of dollars. Government officials and Japanese firms say that the increase in demand of the chips in the US has caused the American companies to divert their goods to American customers. US industry analysts say US companies are also having trouble getting the number of chips they need and that there is no favoritism toward American companies. Figures for market share for the 1992 final quarter will be released in late Mar 1992 and are expected to be less than 20 percent, the amount required by a semiconductor trade agreement between the two countries. Japanese officials deny that the lower market share percentage is due to a closed market in Japan.
