U.S. hints at keeping ban on some Canadian beef

United States' decision to delay the reopening of the border to young Canadian cattle and some beef products is expected to give a blow to the country's beleaguered cattle industry. The U.S. National Cattlemen's Beef Association has asked for an 'indefinite extension' on the comment period that would lift the ban on some Canadian imports and allow gathering of all information from the investigation.

Alberta law on child prostitution struck down
Article Abstract:
Provincial Court Judge Karen Jordan has ruled that Alberta's new law on child prostitution is unconstitutional. The law, which would have mandated incarceration of sex workers under the age of 18 in social services facilities, would have suspended a number of legal protections.

Booming Alberta rings up huge surplus

The Canadian province of Alberta has reported a budget surplus of $2.7 billion for the fiscal year 1999-2000 due to the region's rapidly expanding economy. Alberta's Treasurer Steve West made the announcement at the World Petroleum Congress conference in Calgary.
