Unholy war: massacre in Indonesia
Article Abstract:
The revolutionary movement in the Aceh province of Indonesia is growing during the late 1990s. The independence movement, mostly sponsored by the militaristic Free Aceh Movement, was violently subdued by Indonesian soldiers through the decade. The soldiers are reputed to have murdered innocent men, women, and children. The Free Aceh Movement has grown since the departure of former Indonesian President Suharto.

Indonesia's 1999 elections are the first free elections since 1955. However, results of the June 7 election were not completed for over 2 weeks. Officials are promising to complete tabulating results by June 21. None of the 4 parties is able to establish a majority in the 500-seat parliament. The most probable presidential winner is Megawati Sukarnoputri.
